Northeast India rain deficiency

Updated on July 21, 2016; 03:30 PM IST: Monsoon Rains to ease over Northeast India

As on July 21, 2016, on the eastern end of the axis of Monsoon trough over Northeast India, an associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. This system was providing the entire Northeast India with incessant rains.

But this system will gradually weaken and start moving towards Uttar Pradesh. This abatement of weather system over Northeast India will lead to decrease in rain intensity over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

But as of now the good rains will continue at many places. Jorhat, Dhemaji and Sonitpur will continue to be on the verge of getting flood like situation and the situation may further aggravate.

Cherrapunji is one such station that has been blessed with 200+ mm of rainfall for the past few days. Yesterday, from 08:30 AM in the morning to 05:30 PM in the evening, the station received 90 mm of rainfall.

But with the abatement of the weather system the relief is in sight for the entire Northeast India. Check out the rainfall figures over various places in the last 24 hours:

Rains NEs

Originally published on July 20, 2016 at 03:50 PM IST as: Good rainfall fails to shrink the rain deficiency in Northeast India

All the states in Northeast India are experiencing below normal rainfall presently. Arunachal Pradesh is 8% rain deficient while Assam and Meghalaya region is 31% rain deficient. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura region is rain deficient by 32%.

Although during last 2-3 days, fairly widespread rainfall is happening over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya but still their rain statistics show deficient rain.

Cherrapunji, Meghalaya has been receiving extremely heavy rainfall since last 3-4 days. Rain figures over the city are above 200 mm for consecutive days. But still, the monthly average for Cherrapunji and most of the Northeast states is very high.

Now we expect that Assam and Meghalaya will continue to witness moderate to heavy rain for another 3-4 days. Few extremely heavy spells of rain is expected on July 21-22 over Assam and Meghalaya. This heavy spell will bring down the rain deficiency to a great extent. But Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura region will continue with less rain.

So we can say that continuous good rain is likely over entire Northeast India. But we have to wait and see that if this rainfall makes up for the rain deficiency or not.
