Updated on August 20, 2015 01:30 PM (IST): Good rainfall to continue over Dehradun for next 48 hours

Every year during Monsoon, the state of Uttarakhand is one of the pockets in the country which receives heavy rainfall. Among the hilly states of North India, Uttarakhand witnesses most rainfall activity during this season.

July being the rainiest month for the region, the state has been doing well this season maintaining a deficiency of just 12% so far. The state capital Dehradun lies on the foothills with a modest elevation of about 2,300 feet. The city of Dehradun also enjoys a fairly wet season with off and on rain showers lashing the region.

In the month of August, three-digit rainfall in 24-hours is very common for Dehradun. This year too, good rainfall has been observed in the city. Against the monthly average of 688 mm, Dehradun has received 428 mm of rain so far, with 10 days left in the month. Now, with the Monsoon trough running along the foothills in North India, conditions are conducive for good rainfall in the region for another 48 hours. These rains are likely to retreat later but moderate to good showers will continue till then.

However, despite normal rains so far, the city is yet to record three-digit rainfall figures in August. While rainfall amounting to more than 50 mm has been recorded on four occasions, three-digit rainfall continues to evade the city. On August 8, the city received 75 mm of rain, which has been the highest 24-hour rainfall figure in August this year.

Maximum temperature in the city has been settling in the low 30s with the minimum hovering around mid-20s. Pleasant weather conditions are being enjoyed by the locals as well as tourists. With more good rains expected in coming days, Dehradun might just get its first three-digit rainfall for August this year.
