After the onset of Southwest Monsoon, the state of Maharashtra has been receiving good rains. In fact, these rains proved to be highly instrumental in pulling the temperatures from above the 45-degree mark to settling around the mid-30’s.

During the last day as well, almost the entire state witnessed good rain and thundershowers. Heavy to extremely heavy rains occurred over many parts of Konkan. However, the rain intensity was more over the southern districts of the Konkan division. Meanwhile, parts of North Konkan settled with some light spells. In addition to this, moderate to heavy rains were also observed in parts of Vidarbha and Madhya Maharashtra.

Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Ratnagiri and Vengurla recorded extremely heavy three-digits rains to the tune of 163 mm and 126 mm respectively. Mahabaleshwar witnessed 76 mm of rains, Nagpur 69 mm, Parbhani 48 mm, Yeotmal 27 mm, Kolhapur 20 mm, Amravati 20 mm, Akola 8 mm and Sangli and Udgir witnessed 6 mm of rains each.

As per Skymet Weather, the offshore trough is extending from North Coastal Maharashtra to coastal Kerala. Due to this, moderate showers are expected to continue over the southern parts of Konkan & adjoining South Maharashtra such as over Ratnagiri, Vengurla, Sangli, and Satara.

In addition to this, a trough is also seen running from Bangladesh to Andhra Pradesh across Vidarbha. Therefore, we expect moderate to heavy showers over parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada like Chandrapur, Parbhani, Akola, and Nanded for the next 24-48 hours.

Mumbai and adjoining parts of North Konkan and North Madhya Maharashtra like Pune would, however, continue to receive subdued rains. The weather would remain comfortable over most parts of the state and the sky would remain partly cloudy to cloudy.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

Farmers are advised to provide support to Banana, young fruit plants and vegetables to avoid lodging. Farmers are also recommended to avoid irrigation and complete preparatory tillage for sowing of kharif crops (sorghum, cotton, green gram, black gram, soybean etc.) and keep the inputs ready accordingly.
