winters in indiaWinters have arrived in full swing over Northwest India, with minimum temperatures settling below normal at several places. In fact, the cold wave has even gripped several parts of northwestern plains quite early this season.

According to Skymet Weather, moderate cold winds from north and northwest direction have been blowing over northwestern plains for the last many days. As a result, minimum temperatures have been dropping continuously across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR.

Last 24 hours saw these cool winds reaching central and eastern parts of the country as well. This led to significant drop in night temperatures across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal.

In Northwest India, cold wave conditions have extended in some more parts of Rajasthan, while parts of Haryana and Northwest Uttar Pradesh continued to reel under cold conditions. In fact, mercury plunged to 3.5°C in Sikar on Friday morning, followed by Bhilwara at 4.5°C. Both the cities were 5-6 degrees below the normal average.

According to Skymet Weather, when the mercury is below 10°C and five degrees less than the normal average, then it is declared as cold wave condition.

Though cold wave continued to abate major cities of Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur and Chandigarh but mercury has been hovering around 10°C at all these places.

Further, weathermen do not predict any relief from the ongoing below normal temperatures for at least next 3-4 days. These conditions can be attributed to the absence of any active Western Disturbance due to which cold winds from snow clad Himalayas would continue to blow across Northwest and adjoining areas of East and Central India.

However, weather models forecast a fresh Western Disturbance to approach Western Himalayas by November 27-28, which will change the direction of winds as well as slow down the speed. In wake of this, minimum temperatures would see some rise during that time.
