Heat Relents Over Delhi, Comforting Showers Likely Through The Week

May 23, 2023 1:57 PM |

The national capital has been reeling under scorching conditions. Mercury breached 45 degrees at many places for the 2nd consecutive day. While the base observatory at Safdarjung surpassed the earlier highest of 42.9 degrees to set the new mark at a sizzling 43.7 degrees, Najafgarh in southwest Delhi breached 46 degrees for the 2nd consecutive day.  Heat wave conditions prevailed in many parts of Delhi/NCR with day temperature crossing 45 degrees and also staying above normal by 5-6 degrees.  Big respite coming up for Delhiites, very soon.

Passage of 2 successive western disturbances up north and heat-triggered circulation over the plains will twist the weather, steering comforting conditions for the next 5-6 days.  Mercury levels will plunge by 6-8 degrees and stay below normal for the remaining days of the month.

A mild spell of thunderstorm may commence in the late hours tonight and decent moderate to heavy showers follow later. Spread and intensity will peak between the 24th and 26th of May 2023. Lightning and thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds are likely during this period. The subsequent 2 days may witness short-duration moderate showers and finally, the fleeting rains to close the month of May on a consolatory note.

Delhi has already clocked 61mm of rainfall so far against the monthly normal of 29.4mm. The upcoming prolonged wet spell may dump another 40-50mm of rain to cross the 100mm mark during this month. Exercise caution to stay safe during the lightning and thunder. Waterlogging may also disturb commuters at vulnerable locations.
