A heat wave had earlier swept Rajasthan during last week, wherein the mercury levels crossed 45°C-46°C. Temperatures dipped following rainfall and snowfall activity over the mountains. Temperatures are likely to shoot up once again, and a heat wave is likely over large parts of West Rajasthan and the interiors of Gujarat. Even a severe heat wave is expected in some pockets of Rajasthan, more so in the border areas next to Pakistan.

The western disturbance over the mountains will make its way eastward. A cyclonic circulation in the lower levels is coming up over Central Pakistan and adjoining West Rajasthan. This pattern will draw southwesterly winds from the Pakistan region and sweep across West & South Rajasthan and Saurashtra & Kutch, along with interiors of Central and North Gujarat. The temperatures had earlier dropped over Central and South Pakistan because of the snow and rain in the northern parts of the country.

Following clearance of the weather system, the temperatures have started rising again over that area. Some of the locations have recorded temperatures in excess of 44°C:

Chhor (44.4°C)

Pad Idan (44.4°C)

Jacobabad (45°C)

Nawabshah (45.4°C)

Sibi (46°C)

Once again, the heat is likely to get transported with the favorable winds over Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Multiple factors pooling together will trigger a rise in temperatures over the arid parts of Rajasthan and semi-arid regions of Gujarat. Over West Rajasthan, the mercury will rise, and scorching temperatures will trigger heat wave conditions.

Moderate to severe heat wave is likely over Barmer, Jaisalmer, Phalodi, Bikaner, and Jodhpur, where a prolonged spell of 5-7 days is likely with mercury in the range of 44°-46°C. Heat will get extended to Jaipur, Churu, Chittorgarh, Kota, and Ganganagar. Heat wave conditions of similar duration are likely to come up covering Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Baroda, Amreli, Rajkot, Surendranagar, and Bhuj.

Severe heat during the day will be coupled with warm nights over these parts. These conditions will prevail for the remaining days of April. Relief, if any, is expected in the first week of May 2025, when the pre-monsoon activity is likely to pick up over most regions of the country.
