Day temperatures have been soaring well above the normal in Rajasthan and Gujarat. West Rajasthan and the interiors of Saurashtra & Kutch and central Gujarat have been reeling under heat wave conditions. Barmer, the border post of Rajasthan, has recorded a maximum temperature of 45.6°C yesterday, the highest in the country. Belt of mercury, in excess of 40°C, covers entire Rajasthan and Gujarat, outside the coastal parts. Heat wave conditions are likely to continue for Rajasthan for three more days and a little longer for Gujarat.

Many parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat have recorded the season’s highest temperatures in the past 24 hours.  Jaipur and Ajmer recorded first 40°C of this year yesterday. The other locations include Barmer-45.6°C, Jaisalmer-45°C, Bikaner-43.3°C, Jodpur-43°C, Chittorgarh-43.3°C, Ahmedabad-43°C, Rajkot-43.9°C, Bhuj-43°C, Surendranagar-44.2°C, Deesa-43.3°C, Gandhinagar-42.5°C, and Baroda-42°C. All these temperatures qualify for heat wave criteria over the respective pockets.

The main reason for the extensive heat wave conditions is extreme temperatures across the border over the central and southern Pakistan region. These stations include Hyderabad (Sind) - 45°C, Nawabshah - 47°C, Pad Idan - 46°C, Sibi - 46°C, Rohri - 45°C and Chhor - 44.4°C. The wind pattern is favorable for the transfer of heat from across the border to parts of Gujarat and the border state of Rajasthan. Heat wave conditions will continue for the next three days over Rajasthan and get extended for most parts of Gujarat.

A western disturbance is approaching the northern hills tomorrow. An induced cyclonic circulation will follow over parts of West and North Rajasthan. An east-west trough is likely to extend all along the Indo-Gangetic plains. Plains of North India will have scattered rain, thundershowers and dust storms between 09th and 12th April. This wet spell will provide some relief from heat over Rajasthan. However, the state of Gujarat will have an extended effect till the weekend. Day temperatures in excess of 40°C will sweep the region for the entire next week.
