Heatwave Forecast: April to end with intense heat across India

April 24, 2016 12:40 PM |

heatwave insideSeveral parts of India have been reeling under intense heatwave conditions for the past few days. Temperatures are increasing by a few notches every day. The extreme heatwave has killed more than 160 people across the country. Every single day a new heat record is set.  While people have been praying for some relief in the offing, according to Skymet Weather, April is likely to end on a much hotter note.

During the past few days, various parts of the country have either been observing hot weather conditions or have been reeling under intense/severe heatwave conditions. While usually most affected regions are parts of Central and Interior Peninsular region, temperatures have gone beyond the normal levels in several other areas as well.

This year also, heatwave conditions had begun to affect various parts of Telangana, Rayalseema, and Maharashtra resulting in the death of scores of people. However, soon the focus shifted towards East India. Now, many areas in West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar are reeling under severe heatwave conditions. So much so that maximums have been clocking above the 45-degree mark in several cities of Odisha.

When the temperatures start increasing well above the average levels, Pre-Monsoon showers take over and bring in some relief from extreme weather conditions. However, this year excessive heat accumulation in the absence of rains is only causing more trouble to the residents.

Coastal areas where temperatures usually remain under check are observing above average temperatures. Hot and humid weather conditions have become a common phenomenon in these regions. The absence of any weather system has only been resulting in an increase in the maximums, As per Skymet, no rainfall is expected even in the coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal.

The only region where pleasant weather conditions are being observed is Northeast India. Here, a cyclonic circulation, which is over East Assam and Meghalaya have been resulting in record-breaking rains over the region for the past few days.

The hills of North India have also been observing pleasant weather conditions due to a Western Disturbance affecting the region. However, the system is now moving away, and here also temperatures will witness a significant increase.

Also, Northwest India has been spared from seeing extremely high temperatures. But, with the Western Disturbance moving away and no weather system in sight, temperatures all set to increase here as well. By April 27, the entire pocket will come under the grip of intense heatwave conditions.

For the remaining days of April, the situation will only worsen. During the last few days of April between April 27 and 30, extreme heatwave conditions will be observed over areas including Telangana, Rayalaseema, Maharashtra (Vidarbha and Marathwada), Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

No weather system is in sight which may give rain over the areas observing record-breaking temperatures. Thus, the month of April is expected to end on a hotter note with many other cities breaking heat records in the coming days.
