Heavy Monsoon rain likely to continue in Goa

July 25, 2015 2:47 PM |

Rain in GoaJuly is the rainiest month in Goa, when the state receives 900 mm of rainfall on an average. It is common for the place to witness 3-digit rainfall in just 24 hours.

During the four month-long Monsoon season, Goa receives rain mostly on account of the offshore trough, which becomes a semi-permanent feature along the West Coast of India.

This offshore trough gets activated when some weather system (cyclonic circulations or low pressure areas) develops in the Bay of Bengal.

At present, there are two low pressure areas – one over East Rajasthan and adjoining West Madhya Pradesh and the second one is brewing over North Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Odisha region. These two weather systems have activated the trough which brought 166 mm of rain in Goa, in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday. This is the third highest 24-hours rainfall figure in last 10 years and the highest in last 6 years.

This was the second occasion when Goa received heavy rainfall this month. Last time on July 20, the offshore trough brought 66 mm of rain. The total rainfall in July so far has mounted up to 632 mm.

Heavy to moderate Monsoon showers are likely to continue in Goa for next few days.

Monsoon in Goa

Monsoon rains continue in August, when the place receives good showers of 591 mm. We can see some rainfall even when Southwest Monsoon withdraws in September. Weather in July and August generally remains pleasant with maximums settling in higher twenties. The weather starts heating up by mid-September and given the humidity, even 32°C seems uncomfortable.
