Heavy Mumbai rains

Mumbai rains have remained unstoppable for the last many days. The city has observed heavy rains to the tune of 375 mm during the last 24 hours. What is more surprising, this is the highest amount of rainfall recorded in a decade in the month of July in a span of just 24 hours. The heavy rains have wreaked havoc for the fifth consecutive day, thus resulting in air, train and road traffic disruption.

In the wake of these activities, the Government of Maharashtra has declared Tuesday as a public holiday in Mumbai. The schools and colleges have been shut down as one can see nothing else but just water everywhere. With heavy rains making an appearance quite frequently now, the express highway has been jammed, with high tides making the situation of water logging even worse. The entire city has come to a standstill and Naval Teams, NDRF, fire brigade, and local volunteers have been put on high alert.

Not only this, extremely heavy downpour has taken lives of around 22 people due to different incidents of the wall collapse. The weak structures, hut or Kutcha houses have fallen down, thus resulting in life taking incidents.

Earlier than this, the city had recorded 274.1 mm of rains in 2009. The highest ever was in 2005 when the city recorded 944.2 mm rain in a span of 24 hours.

According to our meteorologists, heavy rains will continue to lash the city for the next 24 hours. Thus, people are advised to stay indoors only. After 24 hours, rains will taper over the region and the situation may improve slightly.
