Heavy pre monsoon rains batter Kerala, more showers likely

Heavy rain lashed Kerala over the past 24 hours. So much so that in the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Alappuzha recorded 158 mm, Kollam 115, Kochi 150, Kottayam 59, Kozhikode 35, Kumarakom 111, Palakkad 95, Thiruvananthapuram AP 106, Thiruvananthapuram city recorded 125 mm rain.

Kerala has already seen large rain excess with a 73% surplus. Kerala has been witnessing on and off moderate to heavy rain and thundershower activities for the last one month or so.

Moderate winds from the Arabian Sea are continuing over the state. A cyclonic circulation has developed over Kerala and adjoining parts of the Southeast Arabian Sea. A trough is extending from this cyclonic circulation to the North coast of Tamil Nadu.

Moderate to heavy showers with isolated very heavy spells may continue over many parts of Kerala until May 21st. Thereafter, there may be a slight dip in rain activities but the weather will not go dry. The onset of monsoon is expected to be around May 26th over Kerala with an error margin of 3 days.

First 10 days of June seem to be good for Kerala in terms of rainfall. The average rainfall for Kerala during the monsoon season is very high. According to Skymet, overall monsoon rain over the state between June 1st and September 30 may be slightly less than average.
