Heavy rain and snow in store for Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh

The states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir begin to witness and increase in weather activity as the month of December begins. The frequency of Western Disturbances during this period also increases by manifold.

The hilly states not only witness an increase in the frequent spells of rains, but snow days also begin to make appearances making residents across the country pack their bags and rush to the hills. During the past few days, the region has not witnessed any such weather due to the weak Western Disturbances over the Himalayas.

However, an active Western Disturbance is currently moving across Jammu and Kashmir. Due to this weather system, the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir have already witnessed some rain and snow.

In fact, during the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Gulmarg recorded a good 17.2 mm, Banihal saw 7 mm of rains, Srinagar 4.3 mm, Katra 10.6 mm, Jammu 6.4 mm, and Qazi Gund 4 mm. Not only this, higher reaches including Pahalgam, Rajouri, Gulmarg and even a few parts of Himachal Pradesh have witnessed snowfall activities.

Not only this, heavy snowfall has been witnessed in the Leh region due to which, the Mughal road which links South Kashmir and Jammu region has been closed due to fresh snowfall in the region. Since Sunday, the Srinagar-Leh highway has also been closed for the winter months.

Now, these rainfall activities will also cover the mid reaches of the hills. In fact, rainfall intensity will vary between moderate to heavy. More snowfall is expected to occur in the higher reaches of both Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh. The possibility of some snowfall in the mid reaches also cannot be ruled out.

These weather activities are expected to continue until December 14. Thereafter, weather will clear up as the Western Disturbance will move away.
