Fairly widespread light to moderate rain with few heavy spells have occurred along the foothills of Himalayas during last 24 hour. Places to be most affected include East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.
These rains could be attributed to a trough extending from Punjab to Gangetic West Bengal across the cyclonic circulation over Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. These two weather systems have together combined to bring very heavy rain over Gorakhpur and Bahraich.
Gorakhpur recorded 55 mm of rainfall and set an all-time record for the month of May. Earlier the 24 hours rainfall record was set on May 26, 2014 (33.7 mm).
Bahraich also recorded 50 mm during last 24 hours which is highest after 2006 (55.4 mm).
We expect good rains to continue all along the foothills of East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim for next 24 hours.
Thereafter, the intensity of rain will increase over eastern parts of Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, central parts of West Bengal and Sikkim. This could be attributed to the emergence of a cyclonic circulation over West Bengal.
Good pre-Monsoon rains have eluded East India during April and most of May. Therefore, these rains have come as a blessing to bring down temperatures. Pleasant weather conditions will continue to prevail over the region for next few days.
