Heavy rains to continue in Kolkata, Bankura; Puri, Bhubaneswar to witness moderate spells

Southwest Monsoon has remained good so far for the states of Odisha and West Bengal. Both the states have been bestowed upon with good rains by the rain gods. July has remained a rainy month for both West Bengal and Odisha though the intensity of rains varied, the districts of both the states have rarely remained dry.

In the last 24 hours also, heavy to extremely heavy rains have occurred over West Bengal but moderate spells were observed by the districts of Odisha. Now, the same is expected to continue. Let’s take a look at the rainfall recorded in the various districts of West Bengal and Odisha within a span of 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Sunday:

As per Skymet Weather, a low-pressure area is over Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand. In the wake of this weather system, the districts of West Bengal and Odisha recorded heavy to very heavy rains. Moreover, as this system will continue to persist over the region for another 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rains are likely to lash West Bengal for next 24 hours. Odisha may also continue to witness moderate with isolated heavy spells.

However, the rain intensity will be higher over Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata as compared with the other parts of the state. But the remaining parts of West Bengal will also get to witness some good rains for next 24 hours. Thus, districts such as Bankura, Kolkata, Midnapore, and Coochbehar may get to see some heavy spells while rains of moderate intensity are likely in Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Cuttack.

North Odisha will receive moderate to heavy rains. After 24 hours, this weather system is likely to weaken and is expected to move in a northwest direction thereby reducing rains over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata. However, still scattered showers with one or two moderate spells are expected to continue for another couple of days.
