Heavy Snowfall Triggered Landslides, Avalanches and Roadblocks in Western Himalayas
Mar 1, 2025, 12:30 PM | Skymet Weather TeamOne of the heaviest spells of rain and snowfall in recent years has gripped the Western Himalayan region, bringing both relief and chaos. A strong Western disturbance, which approached the region on February 26th, has caused intense rain and snowfall across the hills. This weather event, which gradually intensified into heavy to very heavy snowfall, marks the most significant spell of winter precipitation this season. Until late February, most hilly states were experiencing a significant rain deficit. However, this recent spell has substantially reduced the deficiency, offering some respite to the region.
While the heavy snowfall is a boon for agriculture and tourism, it has also led to severe disruptions. The Khelo India Winter Games 2025, scheduled to take place in the region, had to be postponed due to the lack of snowfall earlier in the season. Now, with the sudden surge in snow, the region is likely to attract tourists seeking winter adventures. Khelo India games can also be scheduled now. However, the adverse effects of the snowfall cannot be overlooked.
The heavy precipitation has triggered avalanches and landslides, resulting in casualties and widespread damage. In Uttarakhand, an avalanche near Badrinath Dham buried 57 workers under snow on the National Highway. While most have been rescued, around 22 workers remain trapped. In Himachal Pradesh, approximately 200 link roads have been blocked, cutting off several areas in Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, and Shimla districts. The Jammu-Srinagar Highway has also been closed due to heavy snowfall, disrupting transportation and connectivity.
As the Western disturbance moves eastward, the intensity of rain and snowfall has significantly reduced over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. However, light rain and snowfall are expected to continue in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh until the evening of March 1st. Another Western disturbance is forecast to approach the region by the evening of March 2nd, bringing moderate to heavy rain and snowfall over Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Uttarakhand on March 3rd. The intensity is expected to decrease by March 4th, with clearer weather prevailing thereafter. No significant weather activity is predicted until March 9th.
This spell of heavy snowfall has its pros and cons. On one hand, it replenishes water resources, boosts agriculture, and attracts tourists. On the other hand, it has caused avalanches, landslides, and roadblocks, leading to loss of life and disruption of daily activities. As the region braces for another round of snowfall, authorities must remain vigilant to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of residents and travellers alike.
