The state of Odisha has been witnessing moderate to heavy rains for quite some time. In fact, the month of September itself began on a rainy note with the city of Paradip recording a whopping 88 mm of rainfall on the first day.
Back to back Monsoon systems had developed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal which had given good rains over many parts of Odisha including Paradip. The recent system that had formed as a cyclonic circulation had seen an intensification, concentrating into a low-pressure area yesterday.
The weather system underwent through more intensification and is seen as a depression today. Moreover, the depression has throttled Paradip with mammoth rains of a whopping 412 mm in just a span of 24 hours.
This rain is the highest 24-hour rainfall ever recorded for Paradip in the month of September. The last time the city saw such heavy showers were at 216.4 mm in the year 1995, which were half the amount of yesterday’s rains.
In fact, due to these rains, life has come to a standstill for the city of Paradip due to flooding and waterlogging conditions in many parts. In fact, heavy rains have caused closure of schools in Cuttack as well.
Not only this, so far, Paradip has recorded a whopping 533.3 mm of rains due to which the city has also surpassed its highest monthly record in just about six days. The last time such hefty showers were observed was in September 2008 at 524.5 mm.
Paradip has not only broken the old records but also managed to set new ones for the month of September at least. In fact, with the entire month left, Paradip may be able to record enough rains so that the 2018 September records stay for a while.
