Winter chill has been lashing the northern states of the country from quite some time now. Since January began, most of the northern plains have been witnessing majorly plummeting temperatures. Moreover, areas in Punjab and Haryana have observed temperatures plunging to several notches below their normal.
During the last 24 hours, Hissar has observed the lowest temperature of the season. Mercury dipped to 6 degrees below the normal for the city and settled at 0.7°C making it a severe cold wave condition for the city. The average minimum that the city enjoys in the month of January is 5.5°C.
In fact, this is the lowest minimum that the city has observed from last two years. The last time Hisar has recorded freezing temperature was in the year 2014 on January 6 when the mercury dipped below sub-zero levels and settled at -2.1°C.
As per Skymet Weather, the affected Western Disturbance in the Western Himalayan region is said to have moved away thus, paving way for change in the wind pattern. Moreover, the icy cold northwesterly winds are now blowing from the snow-clad Himalayas towards the northern plains of the country.
In the wake of this weather system, minimums have been witnessing a dropping trend over North India including Punjab and Haryana. Thus, this has led to drop in minimums over these regions. Moreover, similar weather condition is expected to prevail over the region for next 24-48 hours and mercury is likely to settle below the normal mark for next two to three days.
