Skiing in GulmargThe best time for snow lovers to visit Jammu and Kashmir is the month of February. All thanks to frequent Western Disturbances affecting the region during this month.

March is the rainiest month for Jammu and Kashmir while February is the month when the state receives the highest amount of snowfall.

Pahalgam receives about 142 mm of precipitation in the month of February. The monthly average in Gulmarg is 224 mm while Srinagar records about 72.3 mm.

Temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir

Both day and night temperatures were settling well above normal levels in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir for the last few days. The present Western Disturbance has brought fairly widespread rain and snow over the state. Consequently, temperatures have plunged by 8 to 10 degree Celsius across the hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

To substantiate the above statement, we will take into account the temperatures recorded in the following three places:

Gulmarg – From February 5 to 9, maximum settle between 5 and 7 degree Celsius in Gulmarg. Minimum also hovered around -2 to -3°C.  On the 10th maximum temperature came down to 3.8°C while minimum remained around -2°C.

A fresh Western Disturbance started affecting the region by Thursday, bringing down the day temperature to -2°C while the minimum on Friday morning settled at -9.6°C.

Similar situation has been witnessed in Pahalgam and Srinagar.

This huge variation in temperatures is due to frequent and quick arrival of Western Disturbances in the month of February. The weather systems come frequently and clear off even more quickly. In the absence of any precipitation temperatures can shoot up in just 24 hours.

As of now, the present Western Disturbance is clearing away. Temperatures are likely to rise today and weather will remain clear and bright for the next 48 hours. A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect the region by February 16. A feeble one will bring some light rain and snow in the higher reaches of the state around February 13.
