Monsoon in MumbaiUpdated on July 13, 2015, 12:04 (IST): Dry weather conditions to prevail in Mumbai for a week

After some very good rain in June, Mumbai has been battling dry weather conditions in July. According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, in the month of July Mumbai has received a paltry 19.6 mm of rain so far.

The last time that the city had gone through such a situation was in 2005, when only 60 mm of rain was recorded till the middle of the month.

Meanwhile, there aren't any chances of good rain in Mumbai for at least one week. Warm and humid conditions will prevail for the entire week. The minimum humidity in the city is around 60%, while it touches 90% during its peak time of early morning and late night hours.

According to weathermen at Skymet, there isn't any weather system coming up in the Bay of Bengal which could activate the off-shore trough along Konkan and Goa, which could give good amounts of rain in the city.

July is the rainiest Month for Mumbai, when the city receives 800 mm of rain on an average. This year Southwest Monsoon remained subdued in Mumbai during the initial phase. It started on a low key but picked up with a bang after the first ten days. Consequently, Mumbai recorded 1174 mm of rain in June, breaking the all-time high of 1037.1 mm recorded in 1971. The month of July seems to be going the June way. The city has received just 6.5 mm of rain so far with 6 mm of rain witnessed in just one day. In last 24 hours, the city received 0.3 mm of rain.

The characteristic of Monsoon in Mumbai is such that the monthly average gets covered up in just few days. Monsoon rain in Mumbai depends on two factors:

A) Activation of the offshore trough when weather systems come up in the Bay of Bengal.
B) When weather systems formed over the sea move inland and come closer to Maharashtra and adjoining Madhya Pradesh region.

Monsoon forecast for Mumbai

As of now, activation of the offshore trough looks unlikely. According to Skymet, no weather system is expected to move inland and bring good showers over Mumbai. If at all, the city will receive only very light rainfall during next one week. We can expect some substantial rainfall only from the second half of the month.

Temperature in Mumbai

The normal day temperature in Mumbai for this month is 30°C, while minimum average is 25°C. In the absence of any significant spell of rain, the coming one week will remain warm and humid. Afternoon hours could be uncomfortable as temperatures will settle a little above normal. Strong breeze is likely in the evening hours.
