Kal Baisakhi rain likely in Ranchi, Siliguri, Mayurbhanj

Kal BaisakhiNormally March to May mark the pre-Monsoon season in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha. Rain and thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds over this region are known as Nor'westers or Kal Baisakhi.

Tomorrow, we can expect Kal Baisakhi rain over southern parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and coastal Odisha. These localised events will also bring strong squally winds in isolated places. Places to be affected include Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Malda, Purulia, Siliguri and Mayurbhanj district.

As we approach the end of March, dry Northwesterly winds lead to rise in temperatures, close to 40 degree Celsius in many parts of East India, including Odisha. Temperature shoots up in the afternoon hours and available moisture in the air, bring rain and thundershowers in the evening.

An anti-cyclonic feature develops over the Bay of Bengal and starts feeding moist winds over the mainland of India. A confluence zone is thus formed, which bringing Cumulonimbus thunder clouds. Short and intense showers are witnessed in a small area, mostly in the Chota Nagpur Plateau.

At present, a small trough is extending from South Bihar to Odisha. Temperatures are also above normal by 2 to3 degree Celsius. Southerly winds coming from the Bay of Bengal will feed in moisture over East India bringing rain and thundershowers.
