Kashmir remains cut off with heavy snowfall, traffic, power supply severely hit

January 7, 2017 3:38 PM |

Snow in KashmirKashmir remained cut off from rest of the country for the second day as heavy snowfall and rain continued over the valley for the fifth consecutive day. Roadways, air traffic and power supply have been severely hit, leaving hundreds of people stranded.

Thick blanket of snow has carpeted most parts of the region including Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Srinagar, Banihal, Batote and Qazigund.

Reportedly, over two-feet of snow has accumulated at the Banihal tunnel, keeping the arterial Srinagar-Jammu national highway closed for the second day. In addition to this, Mughal road, Ladakh highway and other inter-district roads have also been shut due to deep snow drifts.

Flight operations at the Srinagar International Report also remained suspended for the second day till further notice.

Weathermen predict that no relief is likely soon as heavy snow will continue to mar Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. There might be some respite on Sunday as intensity of rain and snow is likely to decrease.

According to Skymet Weather, the active Western Disturbance which has been moving across the state will be gradually moving away the region. Hence, the weather activity will also reduce but scattered snowfall will continue.

In wake of ongoing snowfall, both maximums and minimums temperatures have dropped significantly. Several cold wave conditions have gripped the entire states including the plain areas of Jammu as well.

Following are the weather activity along with day and night temperatures recorded in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday.
