Kolkata, Digha, Medinipur stand another chance of rain, lightning also possible

lightning strikes in West Bengal

The state of West Bengal has remained the most weather active pocket in the month of March so far, unlike its neighbouring states like Bihar and Jharkhand which have been facing rain deficiency.

Talking particularly about Gangetic West Bengal, the region after experiencing rainfall deficiency in the initial days of March received some good amounts of rain at frequent intervals later on. These spells helped the region to record surplus rains to the tune of 75% by March 15.

This trend still continues. In the last three days, the region has been experiencing fairly widespread rain and thundershower activities along with lightning strikes, strong winds and isolated hailstorm activities.

Places like South Kolkata, Digha, Diamond Harbour and Medinipur are the ones to experience these activities. Weather activity  in the northern parts of the state have been on the lower side.

The intensity remained at peak on March 16 and a similar trend has been observed in the last 24 hours, wherein Diamond Harbour has recorded 26 mm of rainfall, followed by Digha 14 mm.

According to Skymet Weather, the reason for these rains can be attributed to the Confluence Zone that has been extending from East Madhya Pradesh up to Gangetic West Bengal across Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

As the above system is likely to persist for some more time, we expect rain and thundershower activities, along with strong winds and lightning strikes to occur over southern parts of Gangetic West Bengal during next 48 hours. There are bright chances of hailstorm at one or two places as well. The region will witness overcast sky for the next three days and rains will continue with reduced intensity until March 19. In wake of all these activities, day temperatures will fall by a couple of degrees.

By March 20, as the systems start moving away eastwards, the weather in the region will start clearing up.
