Kolkata rains to begin anytime now; likely to continue

Kolkata-Rain

After remaining dry for the past six to seven days, Kolkata has finally managed to receive some light traces of rains in the past day. In fact, thunderclouds are already building up and rains may commence over the city almost anytime now.

Though the last 24 hours also brought some light spells for the city that broke the monotonous dry spell. In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, Kolkata’s Alipore Observatory recorded 3.2 mm of rains, meanwhile, the Dumdum Airport witnessed 1.4 mm of light spells.

As per Skymet Weather, the reason for these light rain activities can be associated with a trough that is running along with the Indo-Gangetic Plains up to Gangetic West Bengal. The trough is embedded with some circulations as well. This trough is responsible for bringing in the moisture content from the Bay of Bengal, resulting in rains.

Southwest Monson has already made its onset over the Indian mainland with arriving over Kerala before time and stepping in some parts of Karnataka as well.

However, Monsoon is yet to arrive over the northeastern states along with some parts of West Bengal and thus Kolkata still awaits the arrival of Southwest Monsoon. The normal date for the onset of Monsoon over Kolkata is between June 8 and 10. However, it is likely to mark its onset timely or even a day earlier as well.

As of now also, Skymet Weather predicts that conditions are favorable for the rains to continue over the city until the arrival of Monsoon over the city.

The average monthly normal rainfall for the month of May for Kolkata stands at 133.1 mm and the month ended with recording 67.8 mm of rainfall. Thus, the city failed to surpass its monthly mean with almost double the difference.

In the month of June, the city usually records 300.6 mm of rains and with the expectations of the arrival of Monsoon by June 10, we are hoping the city would surpass its monthly mean with a good difference.
