The city of Joy, Kolkata observes on and off rains since the beginning of the Pre-Monsoon season. In fact, the average monthly rains in Kolkata increase suddenly in May which is more than twice as compared to April. While during the month of May the monthly mean stand at 133.1 mm, April sees 58.9 mm of rainfall.
This year, on and off showers occurred over the city, but rain activities remained light to very light barring two occasions wherein moderate rains were seen on May 13 and May 18.
Thus, the city is still far away from reaching its monthly mean and with ten days to go, it seems unlikely that Kolkata will be able to even get close to the monthly mean
Now, not much weather activity is expected over the city for at least one week. Isolated rains may occur occasionally, but rains will pick up pace over Kolkata only by the end of the month around May 29. Thereafter, these showers will continue until the end of the Pre-Monsoon season.
This year, Monsoon will make a timely onset over Kolkata and the residents will be able to get the first taste of Monsoon rains on time.
