Last spell of rain by remnants of Cyclone Madi

December 14, 2013 2:20 PM |

Skymet Weather has been actively following the track of Cyclone Madi. The system was stationed over Lakshadweep and south east Arabian Sea as a well-marked low and brought in good spells of rain over Tamil Nadu, including the interiors in the last couple of days. The system has now weakened further, become less marked and has completely moved away from the vicinity of the Indian coast.

In the past 24 hours, because of clouding over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and south interior Karnataka, there has been light rain in the state. At present clouding is confined to southern parts of Bay of Bengal and no significant change in weather conditions are expected in the next 24 hours.

Below are the rainfall figures recorded yesterday and today:

Places Rain in mm (Dec 14) Rain in mm (Dec 13)
Madurai 0.3 74.6
Coimbatore 0.2 30
Cuddalore 0.4 24
Chennai 0.8 9.4
Salem 4.7 8

Looking at the rainfall figures, we can say that rain has reduced considerably. The interiors of Tamil Nadu including Salem and Coimbatore were highly in need of rain, and Cyclone Madi did meet this need to some extent. Kodaikanal has still received good amounts of rain recordeing 25 mm but the rainfall figures are expected to become nil shortly.
