Good rains lash Kerala, more showers in offing

Pre Monsoon activities have been lashing several parts of Kerala and South Interior Karnataka for the past many days. In fact, Kerala has been receiving scattered rain and thundershower activity since the beginning of April.

In the span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Alappuzha in Kerala recorded rain to the tune of 33.6 mm, Kannur 22.2 mm, Kottayam 25 mm and Punalur 16 mm of rains. In the same time frame, South Interior Karnataka also experienced good rains. Bengaluru received moderate spell to the tune of 39.4 mm, Hassan 28.2 mm, Mandya 56 mm and Mysuru 21.6 mm of rains.

As per Skymet Weather, a north-south trough which is a semi-permanent feature during this time of the year is extending from Bihar to Tamil Nadu across South Interior Karnataka. This trough was responsible for these pre-Monsoon rain and thundershower activities over Kerala and Karnataka.

Now, this trough is weakening and is extending up to North Interior Karnataka only. Therefore, we expect pre-Monsoon activities to reduce over these two states during the next 24 hours. However, Kerala may continue with light rains with one or two moderate spells. However, rains over South Interior Karnataka will be less in intensity during the next two to three days. Bengaluru would witness light rain or thundershower activity.

With the decreased rainfall activity, the temperatures in South Interior Karnataka are likely to rise. However, there will be no major change in the temperature profile in Kerala.
