Light rains for Punjab, Haryana today; Foggy mornings and chilly nights ahead

December 12, 2018 1:01 PM |

Rain in PunjabWinter rains have finally made an appearance over the northwestern plains. During the last 24 hours, neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana have recorded fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thundershowers.

Ambala has recorded 13 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Karnal 8 mm, Patiala 7 mm, Chandigarh 2 mm, Pathankot 2 mm, Kurukshetra 2 mm, Sirsa 1.4 mm, and Bhatinda 1 mm.

All thanks to the active Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir that had further induced a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining areas Punjab and Haryana. Although both the systems are now clearing away the region, but conditions still remain favourable for some more rains over Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday.

Short spells of rain and thundershower are likely over Chandigarh, Ambala, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Fatehabad, Hisar, Jind, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Panchkula, Panipat, Rohtak, Sonipat, Yamunanagar, Amritsar, Barnala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Firozpur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Moga, Pathankot, Patiala, Rupnagar, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Sangrur, Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar and Tarn Taran districts.

According to Skymet Weather, rains would be vacating both the states by Wednesday evening and dry days would make a comeback now.

In wake of these rains, minimums have registered a rise but maximums have dropped, paving way for wintry conditions. Subsequently, minimum temperatures will now also drop as cold and dry northwesterly winds would start blowing over the region.

Though systems would move away but there will still humidity present in the atmosphere. And with low night temperatures, we can expect formation of shallow to moderate fog over many parts of the states. Some places might even see thick fog.

With this, we can say that slowly and steadily, winters would be now tightening its grip over North India.
