Low Pressure area to bring Chennai rains back Chennai rains are all set to make a comeback as a significant weather system is developing in the Bay of Bengal and is likely to intensify even further. Rains will commence over the capital city of Tamil Nadu starting tomorrow.

The cyclonic circulation which is over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a low pressure area on May 14 during the late evening hours. Now, the system is expected to become a well-marked low anytime soon. Furthermore, during the next 24 hours, the system is likely to intensify into a depression as well.

The low pressure area is currently marked over Southwest Bay of Bengal and is expected to move initially in a north-northwest direction towards the Tamil Nadu coast. This movement will also result in good rains over several parts of Coastal Tamil Nadu.

While rains in Chennai will be light to moderate in nature on May 16, both intensity and spread will increase significantly on May 17. Thus, good showers will occur over the city on May 17 and 18. In fact, some places may also record heavy showers.

After that, the system is expected to move further north away from the Tamil Nadu coast close to Andhra Pradesh. Thus, rains will decrease in Chennai after May 18.

However, this three-day rainy spell will bring that much-needed respite from the current weather conditions.

Chennai has remained dry for the past few months. In fact, good showers have not been witnessed in Chennai since the month of January. These rains will not be intense enough to cause any damage to life or property. However, during this period, seas will be rough and moderate to heavy winds will prevail.

People have been advised not to venture out into the sea as well. Image Credit: economictimes.com
