Madurai receives a spurt in pre-monsoon rain

Rain in MaduraiMadurai in Tamil Nadu witnessed a spurt in pre-monsoon showers and recorded 28.2 mm of rain on Wednesday. Considering that the monthly average is just 37 mm, anything above 20 mm is significant.

On an average, the city in the interiors of the state witnesses 7 days of thundershowers in the month of April. Madurai is known for large variation in monthly rainfall with as low as 7.6 mm recorded in April, 2014 to as high as 221 mm of rain, recorded in the year 2005. The all-time highest rainfall is 261.6 mm, recorded in the year 1947.

Temperature in Madurai

The average monthly maximum temperature in Madurai is 37.3°C but invariably maximums have crossed 40 on few occasions. The all-time highest maximum is 42, recorded twice in the year 2004 and once in 1998.

Madurai is located in the upper Palani Hills, about 100 kms away from the hill station of Kodaikanal. The  weather in this city is often influenced by the hills situated in close proximity to the city. Therefore, even April is a good enough time to visit the city of Meenakshi Temple. Situated on the banks of river Vaigai, Madurai has a rich cultural heritage.
