Maximums in North India cross the 40 degrees Celsius mark

June 18, 2015 12:54 PM |

MP HeatNorth India during the last weekend- June 13 to June 14 - had seen some good rain, which spilled over to the new week. Punjab, Haryana, north Rajasthan and Delhi-NCR region observed fairly widespread rain during this period. The Safdarjung Observatory in Delhi had recorded 26 mm of rain on June 14, while Hisar in Haryana recorded 20 mm of rain on the same day. On June 15, Amritsar and Jaipur observed 15 mm and 13 mm of rain, respectively.

This rainfall activity led to appreciable drop in day temperatures. Several places saw the maximum drop 4-5 degrees and settle in the mid-thirties. But with rain waning and skies clearing, the temperatures have again shot up in the region.

For instance, Kota in Rajasthan recorded 41°C as the maximum temperature on Wednesday. Jodhpur saw the maximum settle at 41.5°C, while Jaisalmer recorded 42.3°C as the day temperature on Wednesday.

In Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior was battling maximum temperature of 43°C on Wednesday. Patiala was also hot with day temperature settling at 40.2°C. The national capital Delhi saw the maximum settle at 39.7°C.

In past 24 hours, the maximums at several places have risen by 3 to 5 degrees. On Tuesday, June 16, the day temperature in Hisar had settled at 35.2°C, which rose by almost 5 degrees to settle at 40.3°C on Wednesday. Similar situation prevailed in Bikaner where the maximum rose almost 4 degrees from Tuesday to settle at 41°C on Wednesday.

However, the rising temperature should not be a cause of concern as it will be short lived. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, fresh spell of rain is expected across the region from June 21, which will again pull down the temperatures in the region. Monsoon is expected to cover some more parts of the country in next 4-5 days, which will pull down the average temperatures.
