Rain in Kolkata 1

After witnessing hot weather conditions during the initial phase of the month that begun during the fag end of March, heaven finally poured over parts of West Bengal. The intensity of rains the day before yesterday was high enough to record heavy rains at a few pockets. In fact, lightning strikes too appeared which claimed 5 lives in Purulia.

In the last 24 hours too, rains drenched parts of the state. Let’s have a look at the rainfall recorded in parts of West Bengal within a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday:

As per Skymet Weather, a trough persists from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal to North Odisha. Due to these, humid winds from the West Bay of Bengal were reaching over the region. This has led to increasing the moisture content and thereby resulting in cloud development. Moreover, this is the favorable time for nor'westers or Kal Baisakhi when destructive thunderstorm activities are pretty common.

Both these weather activities resulted in good rains over parts of the state. However, now, the above-mentioned trough has become less marked and now another trough is developing over East Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Moreover, the humid southerly winds will be replaced by the drier winds from Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

Hence, a significant decrease in the rainfall activity is expected over most parts of West Bengal. However, scattered rain is likely to continue over the northern parts of the state which include Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

Thus, now, dry weather will be prevalent for another 3-4 days. The day temperatures that were resting at mid-30 in the last 2-3 days are expected to settle at higher 30’s in another 36-48 hours. Thus a marginal rise of 2-3 degrees is expected in the temperature profile.
