Heavy Monsoon rain is finally maintaining some consistency over parts of West Bengal. Kolkata has now crossed its monthly average for the month of July. In just 9 days, the city has recorded 415 mm rainfall against an average of 400 mm.
The onset of Monsoon over Kolkata was a little delayed this year. The state of West Bengal also witnessed under par activity in the month of June due to the late onset of Monsoon. Furthermore, the absence of sufficient Monsoon systems also contributed towards reduced rainfall activity in the region.
West Bengal remained below average in terms of rainfall recorded in the month of June. Even Kolkata recorded below normal rains in the month of June. The city received 215 mm rainfall against a monthly average of 283 mm last month. This comes to a deficiency of around 25% for the city in June.

However, barring the first two days in July, the city has been getting moderate to good rain showers. Heavy rain has also been recorded in the city on July 2, July 7, July 8, and yesterday. So far, in the month of July, rainfall recorded in the past 24 hours (from 8.30 am on July 9) has been the heaviest for the month.
In the last 24 hours, Kolkata received 157 mm rainfall (Dum Dum observatory). Also, 143.7 mm of rain was recorded at the Alipore observatory and another AWS in the city recorded 281 mm rainfall. This is the second highest 24-hour rainfall record in the month of July for the city in the last decade.
Conditions are favorable for good rainfall over the region, especially in the next 24 hours. It must be noted that in the last 10 years, Kolkata has surpassed its monthly average for July only twice. With more rain expected and as many as 22 days left to go, the city is likely to set a new monthly average record.
