Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Varanasi has been cancelled on account of heavy rain. Interestingly, this is the second time when rain has led to the cancellation of Modi's visit to Varanasi. Last month, Modi was scheduled to visit the city on June 28, but heavy rain did not allow the event to take place.

In the last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Wednesday, Varanasi recorded 40.6 mm rainfall. The city has been receiving good rainfall since early morning today as well.

As reiterated by Skymet, good rains have been lashing Varanasi since early morning today, on account of active Monsoon conditions. The rainfall activity is expected to continue throughout the day, possibly with short breaks. Looking at the weather models at Skymet the spell of rain in East Uttar Pradesh is expected to continue for at least next 48 hours.

Monsoon rains are once again set to play spoilsport during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh on July 16. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, good rains are expected to lash Varanasi on Thursday on account of active Monsoon conditions.

The prime minister is slated to visit Varanasi to launch string of development programmes. This visit was earlier scheduled on June 28, but was cancelled due to heavy rain and waterlogging.

At present, the city is witnessing partly cloudy and humid weather. As per Skymet, the Monsoon trough is running close to the foothills of the Himalayas, including Varanasi. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation that is presently over Bihar and adjoining areas will also shift closer to East Uttar Pradesh and its neighbouring areas.

All these factors combined together are expected to give moderate to heavy rain over Varanasi, particularly during the second half of the day. Keeping weather conditions in mind, local authorities have made special arrangements for the event so that rain does not hinder the programme.

Modi would be inaugurating country’s biggest multi speciality trauma centre at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and thereafter kick-start the Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS).
