Monsoon rains in Chennai revive, more showers expected

Monsoon rains in Chennai revive, more showers expectedAfter receiving good showers between June 6 and June 8, Chennai rains took a back seat. Traces of rain were recorded on June 13. Thereafter, rain gods gave Chennai a miss for quite some time. However, since yesterday, Chennai rains have once again revived.

During last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Minambakkam observatory in Chennai has received a good 11 mm of rain. Light to moderate rain and thundershowers has also occurred over many other places.

Southwest Monsoon has already made an onset over Chennai. However, Tamil Nadu including Chennai lies in the rain shadow area. Due to this, during the Southwest Monsoon, Chennai receives 40 percent of its annual rainfall. Major chunk of rainfall is observed during the Northeast Monsoon between October and December. Even the monthly average for June is not impressive and stands at a mere 55.9 mm.

As of now, Chennai has almost reached the monthly average rain figures. Light rain is expected to continue for another 24 hours. Thereafter, between June 22 and June 27, scattered rainfall activity will continue over Chennai and adjoining North Coastal Tamil Nadu.

A few interior districts will also receive rain during this period. Amount of rain will vary between 5 mm and 20 mm. However, the possibility of heavy to extremely heavy rain during this period is highly unlikely.

As constant downpour will not occur over the capital city of Tamil Nadu, no major relief is expected in terms of weather conditions.
