rain in Maharashtra

Heavy rains marked onset of Southwest Monsoon over South Konkan and Goa region, yesterday. However, since then, rains have significantly reduced, but moderate showers to the tune of 30 mm were observed in Vengurla, during the last 24 hours. At present, the northern limit of Monsoon (NLM) is passing via Ratnagiri and Kolhapur.

On the contrary, rains have picked up good pace over the interior regions of Maharashtra, particularly Vidarbha. Its eastern parts such as Gadchiroli has reported 30.2 mm of rainfall, followed by Chandrapur 10.4 mm and Bramhapuri 4.8 mm, in the last 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Thursday.

These rains were a result of a Low Pressure Area, formed near Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coast. This system is moving inland, in southwest directions, towards Maharashtra.

As this system comes closer to Maharashtra, rains will significantly increase. Thus, scattered light rain and thundershower activities are expected in Vidarbha today, whereas, Marathwada may get heavy rains today and tomorrow as well.

By June 23, the intensity of rains will gradually increase and Marathwada, as well as Madhya Maharashtra,  may get fairly widespread light to moderate rain with one or two heavy spells. Thereafter, rains will taper in all the four meteorological divisions of the state.

On the contrary, North Konkan and Goa region including Mumbai would have to wait for some more time to experience intense showers. However, isolated light rains will continue to be observed here.

Southwest Monsoon 2019 has finally arrived in South Konkan and Goa region and in the next two to three days it may cover parts of Marathwada as well. By June 25 or 26, Monsoon is expected to enter Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.
