Mumbai rains: Notorious heavy showers arrive, more in offing

Maharashtra has been witnessing heavy to extremely heavy rains for the last many days. On the last day too, many parts of Maharashtra recorded good Monsoon rains. However, the intensity of the rains was much more over Konkan division, so much so that Mumbai city had recorded three-digit rains the third day in the row.

Parts of Vidarbha also followed the footsteps and recorded moderate showers. On the contrary, the rain intensity dropped and remained subdued over parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Monday, Mumbai’s Santa Cruz Observatory once again recorded three-digit rainfall to the tune of 184 mm of heavy rains, Colaba Observatory witnessed 166 mm of rains, Mahabaleshwar 124 mm, Dahanu 70 mm, Yeotmal 67 mm, and Gondia witnessed 45 mm of rains.

The reason for such heavy rains over these regions can be associated with the persistence of a cyclonic circulation over South Gujarat and adjoining area.

As per Skymet Weather, as of now, we expect heavy to very heavy rains to continue over Konkan division for the next two to three days. Hence, cities like Mumbai, Thane, Dahanu are expected to witness some more good Monsoon showers. The rains would start witnessing a reducing trend thereafter.

Meanwhile, the intensity of rains is expected to reduce over Vidarbha over places like Nagpur, Akola, Wardha, and Gondia after 24 hours. Though isolated pockets may still witness some heavy showers. On the other hand, rains would be light and scattered over Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

Farmers of Konkan region are advised to drain out excess water from paddy field, Mango, Cashew nut, and Arecanut fields. In Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Marathwada region, farmers are advised to continue sowing of Soybean, Cotton, Maize, Jowar, and Bajra.

In the Vidarbha region, farmers are advised to drain out excess water from fields to avoid inundation of Kharif crops. Farmers can also undertake thinning in Cotton and Soybean crop. Apply fertilizers in early sown Cotton and Soybean crop.
