Mumbai Becomes Warmer, Hot Weekend Ahead

As on expected lines, mercury levels are rising in Mumbai and its suburbs. The day temperature at Santacruz rose to 34.4°C, about 4°C above normal and about 2°C higher than the previous day. A further rise is expected today and the mercury may breach 35°C. The weekend could still go higher and cross 36°C. The wind pattern is likely to reverse and get back to normal around mid-week next. Relief follows, thereafter.
Currently, a low-level cyclonic circulation is marked over Saurashtra & Kutch. There is a small cell of anticyclone in the Arabian Sea, off the Konkan Coast. The seasonal anticyclone over Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh has been displaced far to the east over the Marathwada, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana regions. The Konkan Coast is squeezed in between and is having a variable wind pattern. The normal flow of relatively cold winds from Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh has been arrested.
Mumbai remains free from any significant winter weather activity. The city is far from the reach of the western disturbance of North India and remains at a safe distance from the disturbances of the South Peninsula. The weather conditions, mainly the winds and relative humidity, are controlled by the prominent ‘land & sea breeze’ effect. The disturbed wind pattern has altered the timings, strength and sweep of the sea breeze. Extended stay of land breeze and prolonged exposure to southeasterly winds from the warmer areas are triggering a rise in temperatures.
The western disturbance is approaching the Western Himalayas anytime soon. The wind pattern will get influenced, and the plains of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are expected to be warmer than normal. The remnant effect of the cold sweep from the northern plains is unlikely to barge into North Madhya Maharashtra and Mumbai. Relief is expected between 11th and 13th Feb, when the day temperature is likely to drop. However, the solace may be just short and sweet. Another twist in the weather conditions of a similar kind is expected between 14th and 17th Feb 2025.
