The states of Maharashtra and Gujarat are experiencing dry weather conditions at present. At present, an anti-cyclone can be marked over northern parts of Arabian sea. Soon, northwesterly and northeasterly winds are likely to blow over the region covering Gujarat and Maharashtra. The winds are likely to be very warm and totally dry in nature, covering most parts of the desert areas. Initially, as these winds are likely to cover East Gujarat, Madhya and Coastal Maharashtra, the day temperatures will start rising abruptly over these areas. The temperatures over Gujarat may cross the normal during the next 24 hours. In the next 72 hours, these rise further and will be recorded two to three degrees above the normal. At the same time, Madhya and North-coastal Maharashtra will also see a jump in temperatures.

Mumbai may reach the mark of 34 to 35°C today and 38 to 40°C during the next 72 hours.

Looking over the records for Mumbai we see, the city observes weather on the same lines at this time of the year. Day temperatures soar to their highest level in the third and fourth week of March. They sometime even cross the 40-degree mark, during this phase of northerly winds.

Not just the day temperatures, the minimums are also likely to rise by 2 to 3 degrees during next 3 days over most parts of the region. The dry northerly winds will lead to a feel-effect of ‘heatwave-like’ condition towards afternoon in many parts of East Gujarat and north-coastal Maharashtra.

Not to forget, Vidarbha, Marathwada and South Madhya Maharashtra will also remain hot. The actual temperatures will remain above normal by one to two degrees.

A relief will only come later after this hot spell, when temperatures will start dropping March 27 onward.
