Rain in Nagpur

Heatwave has once again gripped parts of Maharashtra, particularly, Vidarbha. Temperatures in isolated pockets of Vidarbha region have scaled up to settle way beyond 45 degrees Celsius.

On Thursday, Chandrapur recorded the maximum temperature at 47.6ºC, Bramhapuri 46.7ºC, Wardha 45.5ºC. On the other hand, heatwave like conditions prevailed in parts of Amravati and Akola at 44.8ºC each and Nagpur recorded the daytime high at 44.7ºC.

On the contrary, the temperatures of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra continued to remain in mid or upper 30’s. While some light to isolated moderate rains has occurred in a few regions of South Madhya Maharashtra and South Konkan region, these were not able to pull down the temperatures as these spells mostly occur during late evening hours when the temperatures have already scaled up.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Thursday, Mahabaleshwar recorded 16 mm of rains, Satara 8 mm, Ratnagiri 6.4 mm, Kolhapur 5.5 mm, Gondia 3.8 mm, and Vengurla recorded some traces of rains.  However, the weather remained dry over rest in all places.

As per Skymet Weather, a trough is extending from Haryana to Marathwada. In the wake of this, we expect isolated thunderstorm or thundershowers to occur over parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada. Meanwhile, scattered rain and thundershowers are likely over South Konkan and South Madhya Maharashtra.

Thus, the stations like Nagpur, Gondia, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, and Mahabaleshwar would get to witness these rain and thundershowers.

Additionally, heatwave conditions would continue over Vidarbha, however, North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada would also witness heatwave like conditions as temperatures would remain in lower 40’s.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

In view of a heatwave, farmers in Vidarbha are advised to apply irrigation to summer crops, In Marathwada, farmers must complete harvesting of matured groundnut as early as possible and keep the harvested crop in shade before storage.

Irrigate banana plantation, pomegranate, and sapota during early morning or during evening hours. As thundershowers are expected, farmers are suggested to provide support to young fruit plants and vegetables and propping up in sugarcane to prevent the crops from lodging due to strong winds.
