North India to face scorching heat for at least next one week

May 14, 2022 2:37 PM |

After a brief respite, heat wave reappeared over many parts of Northern Plains. Parts of Delhi NCR south Haryana southwest Uttar Pradesh and Northwest Rajasthan have been witnessing heat wave. Maximum temperatures are significantly above normal. Heat wave has abated during the first ten days of May due to Pre-Monsoon showers, thunderstorm and rain activities. Moreover, humid easterly winds continued over Indo Gangetic Plains during first 10 to 12 days of May.

No winds have changed direction from east to west leading to increase in temperatures. These dry and hot winds are expected to continue for at least next one week. A fresh Western disturbance will approach Western Himalayas by May 15th which will induce cyclonic circulation over Central Pakistan and adjoining parts of Punjab and Haryana. These weather systems may give isolated dust storm or thunderstorm activities over parts of Punjab Haryana Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh on May 16 and 17. Temperature may drop by 2-3 degree leading to abatement of heat wave. But this relief will be short lived and the temperatures will head north once again.

So we can say that there will not be any significant relief for the northern states of the country in near future. Maximum temperature may reach 45 to 47 degrees over parts of Delhi NCR, Haryana and west Uttar Pradesh. Temperatures of Northwest Rajasthan may reach 48 and 49 degrees. Pre Monsoon activities this year are almost negligible during March, April and May. After the Monsoon onset over Kerala, Pre monsoon activities may pickup pace during month of June over North India. Until then scorching heat will make the life miserable for North India.
