Northeast Monsoon

Northeast Monsoon has made a delayed onset on October 27. However, it did not begin over the southern region with a bang. Until now, only light to moderate rains have been occurring over the state of Tamil Nadu. But now, Northeast Monsoon is expected to pick up pace.

Thus, many parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, South Interior Karnataka as well as South Coastal Andhra Pradesh will begin receiving light to moderate rains during the next few days. Few heavy to very heavy spells are also possible.

Not only this, Rayalaseema will also receive few good spells of rains during next four to five days. Around November 3 and 4, a low pressure is expected to develop over Southeast and adjoining South Central Bay of Bengal.

This system is expected to intensify rainfall activity further over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coast. It will be interesting to see whether this system will undergo any further intensification into a well-marked low or a depression or not.

Thus, the first week of November will see good rains over the entire State of Tamil Nadu due to Northeast Monsoon.

Northeast Monsoon season takes place between October and December. This is the period when Tamil Nadu records maximum amount of annual rain. Humid Northeasterly winds from the Bay of Bengal unleash the moisture over East Coast, particularly the southern parts of East Coast.

Due to these winds, this season is known as Northeast Monsoon contrary to Southwest Monsoon when winds blow from the southwest direction. During Northeast Monsoon season, only southern parts record good rains whereas other parts of the country will remain dry.
