Northeast Monsoon to subside after giving heavy rain in Kerala and Lakshadweep

December 4, 2019 8:48 AM |

The Northeast Monsoon was active in the southern peninsula for the last three to four days. But winds have now subsided in most parts of the region and Northeast Monsoon is expected to take a back seat.

During the last 24 hours, there was a significant decrease in rainfall activities over the entire southern peninsula including Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. In fact, Chennai which was receiving good rains and thundershowers for the last three to four days also did not record any rain. Both the observatories of Minambakkam and Nungambakkam in Chennai recorded nill rain during the last 24 hours.

And we do not expect any significant rain in Tamil Nadu including Chennai for the next couple of days. However, on December 5 and 6, there might be a slight increase in rainfall activities in the coastal areas particularly the south-coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. These rains will be due to the formation of a feeble Trough from Sri Lanka extending up to Coastal Tamil Nadu. However, heavy to very heavy rains are ruled out for at least the one week.

Rains are also set to decrease in Kerala as a Deep Depression has formed in the Southwest Arabian Sea. Moreover, a Depression has formed over Lakshadweep area. Rainfall activities will remain heavy in Lakshadweep for another 24 hours subsiding thereafter.

Sea conditions will remain rough to very rough over Lakshadweep. Kerala and Karnataka coast will observe a little milder condition. The above Depression may further intensify into a Deep Depression and move in a northwest direction towards the North Arabian Sea. However, the system is forecast to fizzle out before reaching the coast. So, we do not expect any significant weather activity along the Indian coast in the coming days.
