People who planned their holidays around Christmas this year in Shimla have to be the luckiest people in the country right now as the areas has finally received the first snowfall of the season. Since last night the continuous light to moderate snowfall has made the weather of Shimla more Christmassy than ever.
This snowfall activity can be attributed to the sudden activeness of the Western Disturbance over the hills of Himachal that has resulted in the season’s first snowfall. Previous to this snowfall the movement of Western Disturbance was confined to the higher altitudes of the region. Thus any rainfall or snowfall remained absent from the hill station.
Since past few days, the temperatures of Shimla had been on the higher side. There were times in the recent past when the temperatures of Shimla were much higher than that of New Delhi’s. But as of today morning the temperature of Shimla was at 3.8°C.
It was the year of 1991, when the Shimla witness a white Christmas.
Along with snowfall over Shimla, many places in like Punjab and few areas of Haryana witnessed some rainfall activity. Places like Ambala, Chandigarh and Panchkula witnessed some good spell of rain. These rains have occurred over the region because of the induced cyclonic circulation over the region.
In the next 24 hours, many regions of Uttarakhand will also witness good rain & snowfall. But this snowfall is likely to continue for the next 24 hours. Due to the snowfall, vehicular movement on NH5 has been affected.
This weather activity could not have come at a better time than Christmas as it is prime time for people visiting the hill stations. Many social media streams have been bustling with snow buzz.
