Delhi had missed the charismatic wintry chill this season particularly in December when the month was comparatively mild. The only cold snaps the national capital and its adjoining boundaries had observed was in the month of January. Otherwise, temperatures stayed above normal for most of the days even in January.
Interestingly, the city even witnessed reasonably low pollution levels. This is basically due to a Western Disturbance that had even led to rains on January 26 in Delhi and surrounding regions.
But now, pollution level in Delhi and NCR is expected to scale up once again.
As the winds are light in nature, the pollutants in the form of smoke released from vehicles, chemicals emitted from factories and smoke produced from coal burning, are expected to remain suspended near the earth’s surface. This would result in enhancing the pollution levels across Delhi and NCR.
Similar weather conditions are likely to persist over the national capital for next 24-36 hours, Thereafter, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to approach the Western Himalayas. Moreover, due to its induced cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan, Delhi may once again witness few fresh spells of rain on February 5.
This would further result in a drop in minimums in Delhi and NCR by 2 to 3°C. Hence, this fresh spell of rain would lead in curtailing down the pollution level again. Furthermore, Skymet Weather also predicts that if dry and cool northwesterly winds pick up pace, pollution level will get washed away thereby improving the air quality.
