As the Monsoon bid farewell to the country, it is time for the season that most the country waits. Winters, the season one waits all year long, especially for Delhi which remains to be the favorite site for the season to settle in.
But given the fact that the unrelenting cold winds has still a month or two to start. But we can notice a significant drop in the temperatures. This time period is when the city’s pollution sparks high. As soon as the minimum temperatures start falling down during night and early mornings, morning haze start to appear.
This is compiled with the wind movement slowing down. Due to this the dust and smoke particle remain suspended in the lower level of atmosphere, i.e. remain closer to the ground. Since there isn’t any strong weather system and the absence of strong winds the suspension of dust particles remain for longer time.
This increases the level of pollution in Delhi. When temperature starts rising in the afternoon and winds pick up pace, the dust particle tend to sweep away.
As the winter progresses the duration of suspension of dust and smoke particles extends and sometimes it lasts for day altogether. Whenever the winter rains occurs due to the Western Disturbance, that the all the pollution settles down and the environment cleans up.
So this is a recurring process during winter season over Delhi and NCR. Only thing that brings respite is the rainfall or northwestern winds, which are able to clear the suspended pollutants from the atmosphere.
