Possible impacts of El-Nino worldwide

April 11, 2014 5:14 PM |

An El-Nino year is often seen as a year of deficit monsoon rain but it also has some other worldwide impacts which we have listed below.

1. According to Melissa Griffin, a meteorologist with the Australia Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the emergence of El-Nino this year could be strong enough to make 2014 the warmest year globally.

2. Excess rain in the western and southern United States could lead to flooding and landslides.

3. In Australia, El Nino events often lead to below average rainfall during the second half of the year, sometimes resulting in widespread droughts.

4. El-Nino could worsen the drought in and around Indonesia.

5. The weather phenomenon will particularly hit the anchovy stock in Peru and as a result the fishmeal industry will be affected. It will also affect giant squid catches for direct human consumption.

6. The bush fires in Australia could intensify due to resumption of dry weather owing to El-Nino,

7. Emergence of El-Nino is good news for drought hit California as heavy rains may replenish the soil and prevent wildfires.

8. El-Nino may also impact numerous species of fish including tuna, seabass, ocean barracuda, mackerel, mahi mahi, and rockfish.
