Pre-Monsoon: Moderate rainfall in Tamil Nadu

Rain in Tamil NaduSeveral parts of Tamil Nadu have been witnessing fairly widespread rain since Monday, with intensity varying from light to moderate. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the pre-monsoon trough along with wind discontinuity has been causing rain in several parts of the state.

As per the latest forecast, the rain activity will continue over the region throughout the week and is expected to intensify during the weekend.

Let us have a look at the rainfall figures recorded in several cities of Tamil Nadu in a span of last 24 hours till 8 am on Tuesday.

With the beginning of May, the state has been witnessing scattered rain at isolated places. But weather models indicate that more rain is in offing in the coming days. The normal average rain for May is 67.5 mm of rain.

Ever since the pre-monsoon season started in Tamil Nadu from March, the state has been observing a good amount of rainfall surpassing the monthly averages. In March, the state received 21.7 mm of rain against the normal of 18.3 mm, making it in excess with 18 per cent.

There was a steep increase in rainfall figures in April, where it witnessed surplus rain by 150 per cent. It had recorded 107 mm of rain against the normal of 40.8 mm.
