Pre-Monsoon Rain-Thundershowers Likely Over Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh
Mar 18, 2025, 1:00 PM | Skymet Weather TeamFollowing heat wave conditions over parts of Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal, a wet spell is likely to come up over the eastern states of the country. The four-day rainy event may commence on 20th March and last until 23rd March 2025. The weather activity will be mild and scattered to start with, on 20thMar and also, mellow down on the receding day, 23rdMar. The intensity and spread are expected to be large on 21st and 22nd March 2025, covering the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and North Odisha.
Earlier, the eastern states, prominently the interiors of Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal bordering Jharkhand and Odisha, North Chhattisgarh, and Southern parts of Jharkhand, had witnessed extreme temperatures in excess of 40°C, and therefore, amounting to heat wave conditions. In anticipation of this wet spell, the heat factor is likely to ease out, and the weather conditions may slip into rainy mode, beginning pre-monsoon activity over the region.
An elongated east-west trough is likely to form from East Rajasthan to Jharkhand in the lower levels of the atmosphere. An embedded cyclonic circulation will come in the trough over the East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh region. Also, the displaced anticyclone over the North Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast, will pump in warm and moist air over the interior parts of the state. The two features together will induce a convergence zone over large parts of these four states. The mingling of two different air masses, along with rising temperatures, will trigger rain and thundershower activity.
The weather activity will start with Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand on 20th March. Spread and scale will increase on 21st and 22nd March to cover parts of Gangetic West Bengal and interiors and coastal parts of North Odisha. Fairly widespread rain and thundershowers are likely on these two days. There is a possibility of a hailstorm as well at a few places on these two days. The weather activity will shift eastward and shrink as well, getting confined to Gangetic West Bengal bordering Bangladesh and the coastal belt of North Odisha on 23rd March 2025. A broad clearance is expected from 24th Mar onward and will last till the end of the month. The temperatures are expected to shoot up once again during this period.
