Pre-Monsoon rains pick up pace in Kerala

Rain in KeralaPre-Monsoon rains and thundershowers have gained momentum over Kerala. Though the coastal state has been recording on and off rain and thundershowers for last few days but it was during the last 24 hours that the region some good showers.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Kozhikode recorded 35 mm of rain, followed by Cannur 24 mm, Karipur 18 mm, Kochi 3 mm, and Kottayam 1 mm.

Adjoining areas of Karnataka and Interior Tamil Nadu have also recorded some showers during the same period. Mandya received 35 mm, Dharmapuri 4 mm, Kodaikanal 2 mm, Bangalore 1 mm and Tirruppattur 1 mm.

These ongoing spells of rains can be attributed to the trough running from Vidarbha region of Maharashtra to Kerala across Telangana and Interior Karnataka.

Further, the affecting trough has now merged with another trough is now directly running from the cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand and Bihar region till Kerala across Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Interior Tamil Nadu.

With this, weather conditions will remain conducive for more pre-Monsoon activities over Kerala, Interior Karnataka and Interior Tamil Nadu for the next 24 to 48 hours. These activities include rain, thundershowers or thunderstorms as well. Nature of these showers will be intense, which could at least go on for an hour or so.
