Pre-monsoon's first cyclonic storm brewing in the Bay of Bengal

May 6, 2013 6:51 PM |

Satellite images indicate a low pressure area building up in southwest Bay of Bengal that could intensify first into a depression than to a deep depression that could probably result in a cyclonic storm in the period of the next three to four days.

During the next four days, meteorologist will keep a close watch on this formation and would gradually unfold the characteristics of the formation and its possible impacts. According to Mahesh Palawat, head of forecasting at Skymet Weather, “the low pressure area may form during the next 24 hours and will become a depression in another 24 hours. Thereafter, it could develop into a deep depression to finally become a cyclonic storm”.

If the weather system evolves as is being anticipated, it will enter the land from east coast bringing very heavy to extremely heavy rain with strong winds. “Orissa, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh could receive bad weather conditions if the cyclone comes into being and moves west-northwestwards from the point where it’s developing in a three to four days duration from now.” said Palawat, with the added relief that continental dry winds could weaken it much before it causes damage to east coast areas.

The last such storm that hit the east coast from the Bay of Bengal was cyclone 'Nilam' in November 2012. Weathermen state that cyclone 'Nilam' had made the entry in Tamil Nadu and Andhra coast while the would-be storm will possibly enter the land from Orissa and/or West Bengal coast.
